KAHULUI/CENTRAL MAUI
Since it opened in 1927, KALAMA BEACH has held a special place on Hawaii beaches central coast. The beach was named KALAMA after Kaha’i-a-Lama, the favorite fishing canoe of Kamehameha I, who frequently visited the area to fish for you and blue (striped marlin). KALAMA BEACH is known locally as “Ripplecove,” which came from the original site plan with many peninsulas resembling waves rippling into shore. It is also referred to as “Kaumalu” after Kaumalu Bay next door.
The waves at Kalama Beach are typical of most west shore breaks, with a gradual slope that becomes more profound the further out you go. KALAMA is often packed with bodysurfers and bodyboarders who take advantage of the waves’ short, rippling barrels to catch their biggest rides. Sand spurs (crowns) form at KALAMA BEACH’s northern edge in front of KEHUE ST., KAHULUI, which attracts bodysurfers and bodyboarders looking for a blast around these hair-raising formations.
The KALAMA BREAKWATER extends almost half a mile into the ocean from KANEOHE BAY, KAHULUI. This long structure, built by the Navy in 1960 as part of a deepwater-harbor project, protects KALAMA BEACH from large waves and enhances KAHULUI’s reputation as the “Sunset Capital of the Hawaiian Islands.” It also provides an excellent surface for windsurfers and kitesurfers. KALAMA BREAKWATER is open during daylight hours, while KANEOHE BAY, which lies inside KALAMA BREAKWATER’S southernmost tip, is only accessible to official boats with permission from the U.S. Navy who leases this land from the State of Hawaii.

LAHAINA, KAANAPALI, AND THE WEST SIDE
It’s hard to believe that LAHAINA was once a tiny village of 10 families–there are now seven shops in the six blocks comprising this town. LAHAINA is known as the artists’ colony, and this small town has become world-famous because of the hundreds of art galleries that line its streets, from canvas paintings, carvings in wood or stone, tapa cloth prints, etc.; LAHAINA is an artist’s dream come true. (See our articles on HONOKOWAI for more about LAHAINA) Another place worth visiting besides LAHAINA is the WALKWAYS; you can walk out over fish ponds, past the LAHAINA BAY HOTEL, out onto a bit of island to find a small SHRINE where daily offerings are made.
LAHAINA is also known as the world’s surfing capital, with waves sometimes reaching 15 feet high. LAHAINA has several fine hotels and restaurants; it is practically guaranteed that there will be an evening hula show at one of them (it’s best to make reservations) LAHAINA also has several shops which feature native Hawaiian arts and crafts other shops offer brilliantly colored garments LAHAINA nightlife is unique in that when you go out LAHAINA most places are more exclusive than they are on different islands—a lot of LAHINIANS could afford to stay home and LAHAINA resort guests LAHIyANA can stay in LAHAINA because LAHIYANA rate is much higher than it would be LAHIAWNA LAHIYANA LAHIYANA hotels; restaurants and night clubs are after all LAHINIANS live there.
LAHAINA means “The Harbour” or “the place where the boat anchors.” The boats sailed into LAHAINA then anchored offshore while their cargos were transferred to waiting surfs which took them to shore. It was from here that Captain Cook stepped onto the island for the first time.
HANA AND THE EAST SIDE
The east side of Maui is not a well-known tourist place compared to the west side. But if you get some time and don’t like the heavy traffic on the west side, you will enjoy the Hana side very much.
Hana town, the east side center, has shopping area streets mixed with old Hawaiian-style houses. Cafes are looking out over beautiful sea view and many sightseeing places. There aren’t so many crowds; plenty of parking lot spaces too! If you go there by car, it takes 2 hours or more from Kahului airport, driving at minimum speed but probably won’t take that long (If I were to move).
During the rainy season, they have reduced visibility because of fog, but this seems to be the best time to stay in Hana; this is because you can enjoy the beach as much as possible. If it rains during the day, you can chill at cafes or go shopping. We stayed there for two days and enjoyed the rainy season very much!
The first night we enjoyed the sunset while having a cold beer. This was a great experience that I had never thought of before. The next day we went to “Aqua reef,” which is among the five beaches selected by American travel magazine Fodor’s 100 top beaches worldwide. Aqua reef has white sand and is surrounded by beautiful corals, so water appears clear blue like aqua color.
PAIA AND THE NORTH SHORE
